ARTIST STATEMENT
McInerney’s early landscape
works of the 90’s consisted of large scale abstractions inspired
by trips from Melbourne to the Western District of Victoria. His later
focus shifted to Melbourne’s inner city commission flat buildings.
This move triggered a change in style, as McInerney’s works took
on a flat, hard edged appearance inspired by the Modernist architecture
he was depicting. This highly mannered interpretation of the subject softened
in a series of commission flat paintings exhibited at Ebden Small Gallery
in 2007, signalling a return to a more gestural form of mark making.
His current series of paintings
continues to embrace this painterly freedom. Inspired by holidays spent
in the quiet, Victorian coastal town of Peterborough and his home in Melbourne’s
inner north, McInerney continues to explore his immediate landscape as
a repository of beauty, memory and nostalgia.
