Composition is the integral structure of painting and the aim is to compose pictures much in the way poetry is composed, by the arrangement of formal elements like words in a poem. From one line to the next, with each word relating one to another, the total is so much more than the words alone.

These paintings celebrate the identity of our suburban built environment and reflect on the relationship between the built and natural environments. In the theatre of daily life these buildings stand like actors on a stage, confidently or awkwardly posing in their separate places. Like weary thespians the dinky-di houses of suburbia are witness to lives lived and lives to be lived, or they may be destined to disappear to make way for the new ideal.
