SHANNON GRAY

monica adams

Shannon’s artistic training began when at the age of fourteen she was encouraged to emulate the style of early Australian tonal realists such as Max Meldrum. It was not until gaining entry into a Fine Arts Degree with Monash University which she completed in 1997, that Shannon developed her more individualistic style inspired by a broader range of imagery from classical painting to modern commercial propaganda.

Shannon is a trans-gendered artist (formerly Robert Andrew) who explores the notion of an ideal beauty with subjects that are inanimate representations of our selves (often dolls, mannequins and masks). Although presented in a simple way, the work is characterised by a dramatic play of colour and tone, bathed in light, they appear iconic, striking and defiant, hovering between lifelessness and immortality. Shannon’s paintings are highly polished and ‘unsettlingly realistic’ as one ‘Age’ critic deemed however she does not regard herself as a ‘realist’, her works are intended to distort and distract, blurring the edge between the real and surreal they are at once humorous and haunting, cute but ‘creepy’.
