ROSS TAMLIN

monica adams
kylie baudino

Ross Tamlin was born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1958. After completing 2 years of a Town Planning course, he was offered a cadetship in a County Council. However, he thought this may not be his true vocation, so Ross emigrated to Australia in 1982 in order to find out.

This is when wanting to be an artist became a reality instead of a dream. With an A pass in the entry test, he began a Fine Arts Certificate course at Meadowbank TAFE. Unfortunately, cancer forced him to leave and move to his Brisbane family. In Brisbane he completed a graphic arts course before returning to Sydney. In Sydney he joined the artists’ studios in Rozelle; first at CASA studio and then 1+2 studio. It was here that he developed his signature corrugated iron paintings. The corrugation in the paintings is a visual illusion created by layers of paint. Our sense of seeing the traditional, Australian icon is contradicted by the use of modern signage. Being in the Balmain-White Bay maritime area sparked his interest in maritime paintings. The original inspiration for maritime art was inspired by his Grandfather who was in the Royal Navy. The darker, surrealist paintings appropriate a familiar image to convey contemporary themes.

Like many artists, he had to take on a variety of jobs, working at Taronga Zoo, a film processing technician, sheet metal worker and welder. After a long stint as a paint and colour technician, Ross acquired the invaluable knowledge that enabled him to make and mix his own oil paints.

Ross lives and works in Northern NSW. He has been a professional artist since 2003. He exhibits regularly in Sydney and Canberra, and is represented by galleries in Victoria, Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Byron Bay. He has works in private and corporate collections in USA, Japan, Britain, Scotland, France, Switzerland, Hong Kong and New Zealand.
