Peter Harris

The paintings in this exhibition reflect the artist’s love of the sea and all things nautical.

The original inspiration for these paintings came from the “John Oxley”, a 1920’s steam packet currently being restored in Black Wattle Bay, Sydney. The restoration involved replacing most of the plates which make up the hull of the ship. Here the elements combined to produce a rich variety of colour and texture and it is these qualities that the paintings attempt to exploit.

The paintings are on constructed timber panels and closely resemble the rusty iron plates, rivets and blistered paint of the waterline of a ship. They have however come to represent the larger landscape of the industrial waterfront.
