ARTIST STATEMENT
“I believe the fundamental reasoning behind art is expression.
This notion is not only reflected in actual art forms but also through
what we, as humans, physically do to ourselves in order to express and
reinforce our beliefs.
Globally, cultures express various ideals
through they way they visually portray themselves. Masks, make up, gender,
style and role play are just some of the vehicles that we, within our
various cultures, have used to convey who we are and what we believe in.
These beliefs are often traditional, social, ritual, religious or purely
symbolic.
In my work, I am continually exploring how
cultures, both past and present, portray themselves in order to convey
their beliefs. What is our particular idea of beauty? Why do we partake
in various rituals? What is important to us? Why do we want to become
someone else? Are we really all that different? What lies beneath what
we do and who we are?
As an ever evolving and individual artist,
I always aim to keep my work fresh and exciting. I love to combine the
contemporary with the nostalgic, the fashionable with the confronting,
the mundane with the revolutionary; whilst focusing on visual expression
through rituals and ideals."
