ARTIST STATEMENT
"The artist is a lucky devil! We are the last of the alchemists; creating something out of nothing. The nothing is that blank canvas and blank state that freaks you out at the time, as you realise your last idea was actually your ‘last’ idea. To the slow process of hammering out an idea that materialises right before your eyes, or more importantly, before someone else’s eyes. That blank stare is the perfect starting point. So we can get away with a vague look which in fact means ‘I’m working’.

It’s with that ‘rabbit in the headlights’ look that you open up all your senses and absorb everything around you, and wait for it all to fall into place. There are no rules, no need for justification, no straight lines or thought. If a sentence out of context, a trick of the light, the lyrics of a song, or listening to a five year old, any thought from the bleeding obvious to the ludicrous triggers a painting, well so be it; run with it!

Quite often the more ludicrous the thought, the more sense the painting makes. We are surrounded by the ludicrous thoughts of politicians and the media which are subject to rules, reality and justification and in those professions, ignore those processes at your peril! The artist is allowed to ignore convention and throw up as many hospital handballs as possible; you’re going to get it, or it’s going to sail on past you! The beauty of the small canvases is that you are throwing up a lot of thoughts, and just like the process of making them, you view them with a blank and slowly a colour or figure out of context is the perfect way to start. Then you have the freedom of your thoughts, from the bleeding obvious to the ludicrous to get what you can from the works. The boundaries are simple; please do not steal the works in a fit of joy and understanding and please do not slash the works in an urge of disgust and annoyance! Any reaction in between, I’m sure the staff at Jackman can handle."
